Slane Castle

The culmination of Robbie’s first successful solo tour, the Slane Castle gig, with it’s audience of around 100,000 wildly enthusiastic Irish fans has become legendary for both the incredible atmosphere and Rob’s faultless performance. It was Slane that put Robbie Williams as a solo performer into the superstar category.

The 1999 tour was also a landmark for Lucky Frog. We were invited by Wob Roberts (Production Manager) and Liz Berry (LD) to take on the creation of the visuals for the tour as well as the management of the projection and playback.

Before the term ‘projection mapping’ was even thought of we were doing it with a pencil and paper and autoCAD, taking into account projection cone shape as it hit multiple planes of the 3D set with its varying screen surfaces. This was also the first occasion where we invented the method of creating soft edge blending using gaffer tape to mask the lenses!
